Kari Weiler, MA LMFT
After my first husband died in 1998, I had not only lost my husband, but I started to lose my friends—none of them understood what I was going through or knew what to say, so they didn’t say anything. I realized then that our support systems can crumble when we need them most, and I decided that I wanted to be that support system, and I wanted to teach other people how to be that support system. In short, I decided that I needed to be a counselor. Now, I am a marriage and family counselor in Fort Collins, Colorado.
With two kids, I was stuck in sales and financial planning until they were older, but that didn’t deter my passion and desire to become a counselor. I just had to provide for my family and be their support system until they were older. After my kids were grown enough to fend for themselves in the evening a few nights a week, I started taking classes to peruse my future career in family therapy. During school, I found myself drawn to topics of families, sex, and sexuality. Honoring this interest and calling, I decided that, along with individual and families, I would focus on was couples, sex, and sexuality.
Being a counselor is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I am honored to help each of my clients and see that I have a direct impact on my community. Watching the impact I have on my community inspires me to show up and do the best for my clients every day. I help people become happier, better people, I help couples become connected again, and I help families become more stable. Helping my clients is exactly what I need to be doing with my life, and I love every moment of it.
Seeing the looks on my clients’ faces when they are better, feel better, and look better fuels my passion for counseling. Seeing the smiles when a couple comes in and tells me that they haven’t been this connected since they met, or seeing the look on a parent’s face when they connect with their child again, or seeing a child who has been abused see their worth again is the most rewarding thing I do. Being people’s support system is my passion.
