What is play therapy in Fort Collins, CO?

Play is everyone’s first language. It is the very first way that we all begin to understand our world, our place in it, and how we can take up space. Play therapy is an effective tool to tap into the child in all of us and begin to understand how we’re relating to our world in ways that we can’t put into words. Whether you’re looking for therapy for your child, yourself, or you and your partner together, everyone can benefit from a little extra play.

Play is the foundation of learning, creativity, self-expression, and constructive problem-solving. It’s how children wrestle with life to make it meaningful.

Play therapy for children

Play is the natural language of children. During play therapy, children and teens can act out, draw, or use other tools to express themselves, help them seem their world, and what they’re working through. I use sand trays and other forms of play to give kids the tools they need to begin to understand what they’re going through. I use play therapy to help children understand and vocalize what is happening in their life and understand how to begin working through it.

Have you ever heard the phrase “your kid isn’t giving you a hard time, they’re having a hard time”? As parents, outbursts and meltdowns can be overwhelming and downright frustrating. But, your kids aren’t giving you a hard time to give you a hard time. They’re having a hard time. When kids and teens learn how to vocalize their problems, they don’t need to use their bodies for outbursts and meltdowns.

If you see your kid playing through the same thing over and over again or melting down repeatedly, they may be working through something. Play therapy can help unlock what they’re working through and begin to understand how to express their feelings, regulate their emotions, and ask for what it is they need.
