What Happens During Couples & marriage Counseling

During your first appointment, I will get to know you and your partner and ask you questions about how you met, what brought you together, what you feel has changed, and what you feel brought you to couples counseling.

After I have established a baseline of your relationship, I may speak with you and your partner individually at some point. Having an individual session allows you to be open and honest about your relationship and say things that you may be uncomfortable saying in front of your partner at this point in your healing process.

Following your individual appointments, I will meet with you and your partner to discuss your relationship and your counseling goals based on what I have ascertained in our initial conversations.

My ultimate goal with couples therapy is to ensure that you and your partner achieve the awareness and healing that you truly want. Healing yourself and your relationship is possible, and I am dedicated to using my training and passion to help guide you down the path of living the life you truly deserve.

My Approach

I use a multi-faceted approach to working with clients. The basis of this approach is emotionally focused therapy (EFT) to look at a systemic view of your relationship and understand the bonds between you and your partner(s). I meet with you where you are at and with what you need to heal. Some couples benefit from a combination of EFT with education, sex therapy, polyvagal therapy, and more. When I fundamentally understand your relationship and the problems you and your partner are facing, you are able to more effectively heal your relationship.

You and your partner have developed patterns in your relationships. These patterns are either driven by connection or a fear of disconnection. Utilizing EFT with you and your partner can help you work through these patterns and create new ones that are driven by connection. The goal of this approach is to create new emotional bonds that are long-lasting and sustainable for you and your partner.

The importance of play for couples counseling

Do you and your partner(s) play? The most unfortunate part of growing up is that so many of us forget how to play. We get lost in the day-to-day things that we think add meaning and value to our lives. Jobs so we can pay our bills, feed our children, wear clean clothes, clean our kitchens, and “keep up and contribute.” Oftentimes, our adult lives leave little room for play. I encourage every one to play to learn more about each other, work together, and enjoy valuable bonding time. Never underestimate the power of play! Not sure where to start? That’s okay.
